In the forty years between my 1973 graduation from SDSU and retirement from Washington, DC, coal-based association work in 2013, I worked as a news director at KIMM, public information officer for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Senate staffer (George McGovern, 1977-80).
I married Deb Eatherton of Whitewood in 1977. We have a son (Andy) and daughter (Jane).
I was able to continue to coordinate Outreach ministries as a part-time employee of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Arlington, during the pandemic. Our team of Lay Assistance Minsters were able to find innovative work-arounds enabling us to continue to provide emergency financial assistance to our neighbors in Arlington, Falls Church, and Alexandria. Late in the pandemic, I was given responsibility for scripting, storyboarding, and live-streaming our Sunday services.
During the pandemic, I put my fountain pens to use and worked on improving my cursive handwriting. I found it to be a soothing discipline and a serene way to keep up with friends and family.
I remain an avid reader and Cribbage player, and until early 2020, loved attending concerts at The Anthem and 9:30 Club in DC. I pedal my bicycle along the trails and streets of Arlington and into downtown DC when the weather's decent. Deb and I visited lots of unfamiliar neighborhoods during the pandemic seeing yards, gardens, and homes we likely wouldn't notice simply driving through. All-in-all, we got through it alright. I hope you did, too.
