The Dash Poem

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth…
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard…
are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left.
That can still be rearranged

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile…
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy’s being read
with your life’s actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

Rebecca Marie Schirra Bottoms

REBECCA SCHIRRA BOTTOMS

Rebecca Schirra Bottoms was born December 5, 1950, in Kewanee, Illinois. With her father in the Navy, Becky moved frequently as a child. It wasn't until she happily moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1983, that she lived in one place longer than three years.

Becky joined the Navy Nurse Corps in 1971 after going to nursing school, and was stationed at the naval Hospital in Philadelphia, the intake center for Vietnam wounded on the East coast. She then returned to school, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Florida in 1978. After this she devoted her life to the most important thing in the world to her - her husband and children. She was married to Dr. Sidney F. Bottoms for 21 years until his death in 1996. They had three children: Christina Cabeen (Ted), Sid, and Sarah.

After her husband's death, she returned to school to earn a Masters in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University in 2001. From 1996 to 2007, Becky was the library assistant/Librarian at the Cranbrook Upper School. She delighted in the energy and intensity of young adults and sought to make their high school years a bit easier. She was the advisor to the Games and Books Club which gave her more opportunities to spend time with students and share her love of Young Adult literature. Most Friday evenings would find her at school with them, along with a selection of home baked goodies.

Becky enjoyed gardening, hiking, and camping. Some of her favorite memories are from various extended camping trips out West over the years.

Hard work and striving to be the best one can be was reflected in her many academic recognitions. She was Valedictorian (out of 701 students) of the 1968 graduating class of Nathan Bedford Forrest Senior High, Jacksonville, Florida. She was the first student in the history of St. Vincent's Hospital Nursing School, Jacksonville, Florida, to graduate with a 4.0 average, in 1971. And she had the highest grade point average among transfer students in the 1978 graduating class of the University of Florida.

Becky is survived by siblings: Francis Schirra of Millington, Tennessee, Charles Schirra of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jane Wiseman of Moscow, Tennessee, and her very much loved sister, Joyce Mathison from New Orleans, who has made it possible for her to continue her fight against inoperable lung cancer for five years.

Becky was a member of Birmingham Unitarian Church since 1985, where she served as Alliance women's group president, as a member of the Religious Education committee, taught Sunday School, and organized the semi-annual rummage sales.

Memorial tributes may be made to Mercy Hospice Care to provide hospice services to those without insurance: 281 Enterprise Drive, Suite 300, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48302.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2008 - 2:30 PM - at Birmingham Unitarian Church, 38651 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
