I was from Berryton High School. We (along with about the same number of kids from the rural portion of Highland Park High School) formed Shawnee Heights High School, choosing the name, mascot, colors, etc.
I was one of the first cheerleaders. Before school started in 1962, our principal, Barney Hayes wanted we cheerleaders to go to cheerleading clinic/camp in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Because it was a new school, we had no cheerleading sponsor yet, so HE went with us to Jonesboro! We traveled by Union Pacific train and left from what is now the Great Overland Station.
The first year was mostly trying to "blend" the kids from each school and I think we did a pretty good job!
