The Dash Poem

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth…
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard…
are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left.
That can still be rearranged

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile…
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy’s being read
with your life’s actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

Frederica 'Ricky' Zachow Stover

With a heavy heart, we say farewell to someone very dear to our Southeast Llama Rescue (SELR) family. Ricky Zachow, our MO Adoption Coordinator had been an active and long time part of SELR and animal rescue. She will be greatly missed.

Ricky's husband John Stover, two wonderful daughters and an amazing grandson will be helping each other struggle through these tough times.

John related, "Her animals were her life. She was very good to her animals and they miss her terribly. We chose the name Bent Tine Farm years ago after discovering yet another broken tool. For a while there I spent more time fixing my tools than making repairs.

Currently we have 9 llamas, 4 dogs, 12 cats, 2 rabbits, 2 hens, and 3 guinea hens. Not the biggest zoo in the country, but keeps me busy! Ricky was the brains behind this outfit, I was just the labor.

Memories can be tricky; no matter how happy, they make us sad. There is a lot to celebrate about Ricky, and on the 27th, I will be celebrating her life and her 70th birthday. "

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, to offer your loving support by making a small donation in Ricky's memory to SELR at www.southeastllamarescue.org . Thank you Ricky, for sharing your life with ours.
May you be at peace.

Ricky passed away on August 29, 2013.
