RCHS Stories

This website gives us an opportunity to archive moments in time and share them with our classmates. If you would like to tell a funny story you remember from school or tell about a special event during that time, here is the place for such stories.  Don't forget to post a picture if you have one.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Stain Glass Windows...

The stained glass windows were on the outer two sides of the balcony in our high school auditorium.  Mary Ann Blanchard (Goode) could not recall how many there were, maybe 5 on each side?  Her father managed Black Hills Glass and Mirror Company, and they were contracted to replace the stained glass units with safety glass.  The leaded glass windows were being damaged, and perhaps their safety integrity was too compromised.  Unfortunately, Mary Ann does not know what happed to the others. Mary Ann‘s daughter in Minneapolis has the section that was on top of this window.  I wonder how many classmates remember these beautiful windows? I am so glad a piece of our history was saved!

Events & Tickets....

Thank you to Paul Jensen for sharing these treasured items that will bring back many memories to our classmates.

Dakota Days Band Festival ...

The Dakota Days' Band Parade and Festival in June was a big event in Rapid City for several years, drawing bands from around the state.  The DeMolay boys were the Band Queens escorts for the weekend.  Here we pose for a photo on O'Hara football field.  From left to right, they are Dana Hedin, Ned Leonard, Paul Jensen, Ron Oney, Carl Pengra?, ??, Scott Wilcox, David Doud, Scott Norman, and Dave Thomas.  Can anyone name for sure the two middle boys?

Powderpuff Football...

Here is the real story behind this picture... We were practicing for the Junior-Senior Powderpuff Game when Fred Lehmann showed up at the park to take a picture.  He wanted a shot of the ball being kicked. What are the odds she would accidently kick the ball right into the camera lens! Fred left after that picture and we never asked how bad the camera was damaged, but the photo turned out great!  Vicki Steelman was the kicker with Mary Beth Howe holding the ball while Elaine Beka and Barb Snyder watch.
