GEORGE W. CLAXTON Recorder Staff WHATELY -- A 21-year-old Sunderland man was pronounced dead at the scene of an early morning one-vehicle crash Wednesday in which his body was thrown from his car.

Recorder, The (Greenfield, MA) - December 6th, 2000.  Richard A. Wroblewski of Meadowbrook Drive was apparently driving north along River Road just north of the Hatfield line in Whately when his vehicle drifted to the edge of the road and smashed into a series of concrete guardrail posts before flipping over and throwing his body from the car, according to police.

Wroblewski was a Sunderland native who attended Frontier Regional School and worked on a potato farm in the summer. Since September, he worked as an asphalt roller operator for Warner Brothers Construction, according to construction manager James Tudryn.

''He was a really nice kid,'' Tudryn said.

According to police, no definitive cause for the crash could be determined at press time and the district chief medical examiner's office had not yet released a cause of death.

The spokesman for the state police said that although it was a cold night and some areas had snow, weather was not a factor in the crash.

''There was no sign of icy roads,'' he said.

Jessica Hayes, 25, of Sunderland, the acting office manager in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, died Dec. 21 after being struck by a car on Route 116 in Sunderland.

Born in Northampton, she was a 1997 graduate of Frontier Regional High School in South Deerfield and received a bachelor''s degree with honors in 2001 from the Isenberg School of Management, attending on a full scholarship.


She had worked since June as an undergraduate program assistant in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and was recently named acting department manager, responsible for department operations. She was a familiar face to undergraduates as she coordinated class scheduling, advising and registration, and provided general assistance to the students.

 

A talented artist and owner of a small business, Custom Art Cut in Steel, she made structures cut from steel after designing them on a computer. Her work was exhibited in 2002 as part of a ''''9-11'''' exhibit at Herter Gallery.


She leaves her parents, Joseph and Maureen (Hayes) Zak of Sunderland and two brothers, James Hayes and Jerry R. Hayes, both of Amherst.


Memorial gifts may be made to the Jessica Hayes Scholarship Fund, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 913 Lederle Graduate Research Center.
