We love to hear from members of other RHS graduating classes, Cooper grads we knew before the "split", family members, friends who attended RHS but moved out of the district before 1967--have we left anyone out?

Cooper '67, Robbinsdale Junior High

"Although I graduated from Cooper, I have many fond memories of your class from Cavanaugh and Robbinsdale Jr. High and Elim Lutheran Church. I have been teaching at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN for 30 years now. I look forward to seeing you!"

Alice died on October 11, 2013. Although a Cooper graduate, she was a vibrant and fun-loving participant at our RHS '67 reunions. She was one-third of the crazy dancing trio along with Maddie Henry, and Gail Hendrickson--you couldn't miss them on the dance floor!

Campus memorial service for Hanson to be held November 1

October 12, 2013

Hanson, Alice, St. Olaf College Professor of Music

Alice Hanson, who shared her passion for music history with students for more than three decades, died October 11 at the age of 64.

An on-campus memorial service will be held Friday, November 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. It will be streamed and archived online for those unable to attend. A funeral will be held Friday, November 8, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield.

Hanson earned a bachelor’s degree from Wells College in Aurora, New York, and a master’s and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with additional studies at Austria’s Universität der Stadt Wien.

She began her teaching career at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, during which time she was the program annotator for the Houston Symphony.

Hanson joined the St. Olaf faculty in 1982. She taught a broad range of courses, from introductory-level music history to the arts of Japan and the U.S.S.R., as well as many courses on genres and seminars on specific composers.

Hanson’s academic expertise focused on the music of Vienna from the 18th to 20th centuries, but she also had interests in opera and American music. She documented one of her major research interests, the life and works of Franz Schubert in the context of the politics and economics of Biedermeier, Vienna, in her book, Musical Life in Biedermeier Vienna. She also published articles in Music and Letters, Anterem, and the Oxford Biographical Dictionary of Music.

She received numerous grants, including two from the Fulbright-Hays Program for study in Vienna, and was a member of the American Musicological Society and the Fulbright Alumni Association. She also presented lectures to the Classical Philadelphia Orchestra, the Aston Magna Academy at Rutgers University, Westminster Choir College, and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

In 1999 the St. Olaf faculty selected Hanson to deliver a Mellby Memorial Lecture, during which she spoke about “Conserve, Conservative, Conservatory: The Place of Music at St. Olaf.

Cooper '67/Sandburg Junior High/Robbinsdale Junior High

My parents lived on the Crystal ("Gem of the Suburban Twin Cities") side of the RHS / Cooper dividing line. Sadly, I was separated from my RJHS friends but still have vivid memories of:

-- Longing for matching knee highs and mohair vests in hunter green, cranberry and navy

-- Contracting various foot diseases in the creepy cement locker rooms

-- Having an auditorium movie (Johnny Tremain?) interrupted with the news that President Kennedy had been shot

-- Cowering as Mr. Hoff stalked the halls and made girls kneel on the floor to ensure our skirts reached mid-knee

-- Marvelling at teased, Aqua-Netted hair rumored to house families of spiders

-- Being ridiculed by "cool" sophomores bussed in to relieve RHS over-crowding ... and so much more, but I'm out of space and looking forward to our reunion!

RHS Class of 1968. I cried with joy when each of my children was born, but the biggest high I ever felt was when I lined up for the kick off at Mielke Field on Friday night. Now I miss that feeling of invulnerability. I'm married since 1972 to Kathleen. Three children and no grandchildren. Graduated U of MN Medical School 1976. Set out to save the world. I wonder where the time went. See the picture of Miss Larson's Class in Photo Album. I swear that is me, third row, fifth one back. Cut Out of Honest Abe on the Bulletin Board. Must be early spring, just before I had my tonsils out.

I am from the class of 63 at RHS, and when we visited the archives at the school Tuesday, they said we had to see your dvd, so we did and it was quite good. So now I just was interested in seeing the photos from your 40th to see how it went and decorations and all. Ours is Sept 12 at Hinckley casino.

So if you would like to give me a password, I promise not to make trouble. ha

Hello friends in the class of '67 ~

I bumped into Tom Coulter playing golf at the Pines (actually waiting out a rainstorm in clubhouse) last weekend and he told me of your upcoming 60th birthday bash coming up this summer and I thought it would be fun for Karen and me to reconnect with many of our "upperclass" friends that were so special to us during our RHS days. We'd love to join you if our schedule permits to reminisce and catchup on all of our lives since 1967! We'll hope to see you then.

Warmest Robin Regards,
Bob Morgan
