What I observed at the Oct. 15, 2009 PTA meeting at skillz...
As I walked into the school, I was overwhelmed by the memories and the anticipation of what I would here in the first PTA meeting I am going to not as a student. Security refused to let in the alumnis that were waiting at the door as I stood along with them. With questionable stares from the security, they asked aloud "what to do with them?" as though we were creatures to be discarded. We stood there for at least ten minutes or so before Ms. Dye's assistant came downstairs to rescue us from being dismissed back into the rain...
As we sat there and listened to the on going meeting, the PTA president raise the problem of students coming in late to first period (which has ALWAYS started at 8:00 sharp!) and one parent said this was too early so maybe they can start school later. A silent gasp filled the air as alumnis heard this in disbelief. I mouthed, "Are you serious?!?" as I looked at this parent as I began to reminsice on coming in five minutes late for Mrs. Lipke's government class and be marked late or absent.
Another parent brought to the attention that he gave his son a sheet for teachers to fill out there names for his son's progress in each class and stated that two out of the six complied, however, when his child misbehaved in their class that was the only reason they emailed him. Also he waited 45 minutes for a guidance counselor when he had a 2:00 pm appointment, in addition she didn't even apologize for being late.
well Ms. Dye is not getting funds from the school to finance the dance program, which is the last remaining program at skillz, so no funds eliminates the program and by eliminating this program can lead to the closing of skills because graduation rates are horrible and regents scores are uncomprehensible... alums are not allowed on school grounds ... and we cannot volunteer our time at the school without being fingerprinted... I personally spoke to the principal, Judy Henry, and she is not a welcoming or pleasant individual... she seemed quite bothered when I introduced myself as an alumni... I really do pray for the school because it needs help! A couple of Alumnis that came that night were suggesting we should have a fundraiser for Ms. Dye's dance program. This is a very good idea, I believe and we should start organizing something...
