A message from Mr. Eickhoff:

Congratulations!

Dear Class of '89,

Did you ever think twenty years would pass so quickly? Wait until your 45th comes around as mine did last year! Then you will REALLY wonder where all the time has gone.

I am touched and very pleased at all that you have accomplished over the years. You have made an old teacher very, very proud with your achievements. And, of course, I'm going to take credit for every one of them!!! After all, you are quite aware that I was, and still am, very vain.

Seriously, when I read your profiles and the snippets about your achievemnts I felt a bit choked up and feel that your class was certainly one of the most magical classes I ever taught. You have all made a success of your lives and should take great satisfaction in that. You earned it and my best wishes and blessings go with you for the rest of your days.

I truly regret that my health has deteriorated over the years to the point where my travel is severely limited. I would have loved to come up and meet you once again and your families and tell them what truly wonderful people you all are. But, unfortunately, that is not to be as my doctors have plans for me during this same period. That is true of doctors, though---they throw a monkey wrench in the best laid plans!!!

I hope that you all enjoy your reunion and once again tighten up the friendship bonds that have kept you all together all these years.

Thank you for being my students and all that you taught me as well for true education is not simply a one-way street from teacher to student. It is a two-lane highway. You taught me as well and for that, I am truly grateful for you made me a better teacher.

If you were a little girl in the 70s...

You had that Fisher Price Doctor's Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked and owned a bicycle with a banana seat and/or a plastic basket with flowers on it.

You learned to skate with actual skates (not blades) and wanted your first kiss to be at a roller rink.

You thought Gopher from Love Boat was cute (admit it!) and asked the magic 8 ball...Who will I marry? Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett or David Cassidy?

You had either a 'bowl cut' or 'pixie', not to mention the 'Dorothy Hamill'. Later your hairstyle was described as having 'wings or feathers' and you kept it 'pretty' with the comb in your back pocket. When you walked the wings flapped up and down like you were going to take off.

You had rubber boots for rainy days and Moon boots for snowy days.

You owned a 'Slip-n-Slide', and you spent hours on your metal swing set with the trapeze. (The set tipped over at least once.)

You owned 'Klick-Klacks' and smacked yourself in the face more  than once!

You recorded songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the radio speaker.

You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers and had Dr. Scholl's sandals/the ones with the hard sole and buckle.

You glopped on strawberry lip gloss til it was dripping off.

You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple satiny outfits, or the sunshine family.

You had ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color and wore friendship pins on your shoe laces. (Oh yeah!)

You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture; and you despised Nellie Oleson!

You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on kittens on your shirts.

You wanted to be a solid gold dancer and had subscriptions to Dynamite and Tiger Beat magazines.

You drowned yourself in Love's Baby Soft - the first 'real' perfume

What ever happened to Mr. Eickhoff?

Some of you have asked me what has happened with my father, Mr. Eickhoff. After graduation, my father followed his little girl to Texas were he taught in El Paso, Texas as a high school English teacher and a literary magazine teacher. He had great success with his students. They won nationals several times under his instruction. He also taught at the El Paso Community College and a creative writing class at the University of Texas at El Paso. It was a big change from teaching in Camanche, Iowa. Suddenly the class size jumped up over 800 students! Imagine sitting through that graduation while names were being called!

He continued on with his own studies and now has two doctorates. Yes, we now can officially call him, "The Doctor"! He retired from teaching shortly after receiving his second doctorate due to medical reasons. He is my hero as he has fought cancer for the last ten years losing one kidney. He now lives in Fort Worth a few blocks from me.

To pass his glorious retirement time, he makes several trips up through the rockies to Nebraska and over to the east coast. He also continues to research and write books. I had the pleasure of escorting him up to Oklahoma City a couple of years ago where his book "And not to Yeild" was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame. He won the prestigious Wrangler Award for this book. Only one is given a year.

The best thing about his retirement is he has more time to do the things he loves-reading and writing books. He also has had time to spend with his grandchildren and me! And he is well known for his pool parties and cooking for his neighbors! He certainly hasn't slowed down by all means. He is as feisty as ever. I can't help but love him.

You can view his website at this link and email him directly. He would love to hear from you! http://www.randyeickhoff.com/
