Hello, Micki.  Guess where I am?  Grofenwoehr, Germany, about 2 1/2 hours from Munich.  Here until next job and hoping soon to return to Charleston, SC.  Miss family and there.  Visited Perlacher Forst a few weekends ago.  Wierd, eerie, strange...  Walked all throughout the housing area and school.  McGraw Kasern is now a Polizei Academy.  So, couldn't acces.  So, if home, then intend to attend reunion and, of course, would really enjoy seeing you.

Hi Paul, Was surprised and excited to see your message!  It has been so long, soon to be 50 years since I saw you.  Wow!!

Kathy Bohn (1974) and I attended a MAHS reunion (5 years ago) in Munich, Germany (mostly mid to late 1960s) and had a wonderful time.  It was strange to visit the "old home" and we were provided lunch and a tour of our high school.  Great time, but strange.

Hope you are able to attend the reunion in October and would be nice to see you!  Kathy also sends her best and hopes to see you in October.

And nice to "hear" from you, Micki.  Like your visit to Munich, twas oh so odd walking here, standing there, pausing somewhere and recollecting people and events I'd not thought about ever previously, just being in the place again evoked them... and with such clarity, detail.  Just wish me luck getting home from here and I'll attend the get-together.  Oh, give regards to Kathy.

Trying to locate Bill Dunn and Mike Dudley --  both class of 71.  Mike had a beautiful voice and performed in musicals.   I think Linda Becker and Bill went "steady" for a while.

Gads, Lorrie, too much time and way, way too many places--Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Morocco, Hawaii, Iceland, Spain, Japan...--I've been to over past--oh, my gosh, five decades--to recollect folks from my brief time--just nine months, really--at MAHS.  My, how time does fly:  My youngest daughter Kiersten just graduated from the University of South Carolina, and the other three--a son and two other daughters--are happy, productive, engaged or married.  Jeesh, a mite wormwoody.  Hope to see you at the reunion.  Just need to land follow-on employ.  Regards, Paul

Darn, doesn't now seem possible.  Need a solid job offer to leave work in Grafenwoehr, Germany.  Just returned from vacationing with my wife in Italy--Rome, Florence, Amalfi and Naples.  Wonderful country.  Flew from and to Munich.  Wierd and evoking so many memories especially leaving for Kansas State in, oh my gosh, 1973.  Exhausted from travel back to GE.  Hope you all have fun at the get-together, Micki, Kathy, et al.

Ugh, Micki and Kathy, can't make reunion... sadly.  I'd hoped earnestly to see you both, but, alas, not possible and strangely perhaps can't get there from Bavaria, Grafenwoehr, Germany, 2 1/2 hours from Perlacher Forst wher I've visited a few times.  Uber-strange experiences returning to where we were during those oh so formative, memorable... years.  Oh, to stand where, yes, right there where he or she was...  spiritual experiences really.  Have a great time and so, so sorry not to join you.  Best, Paul.  Oh, I recall, Kathy, shortly after arriving to Munich seeing you and someone else after a run in prep for football tryout...  You and she were sitting on the street corner and said something about my running around the block fast.  Gads, the memory is so clear in my mind.  All now.

It's nice to have discovered that MAHS reunions are being held during these turbulent and, for many, troubling times. Equally pleasant is discovering that a good number of former fellow alumni had the opportunity to get together just this past fall. I recognized a good number of names on the antendee roster. After having abandoned Facebook some five years ago, a venue that enabled me to correspond with several of my former MAHS classmates, I'll admit to simply having become patently complacent with regard to maintaining any sort of correspondence. Nvertheless, here's a "Hello" to those who may remember me from a formative period of our collective lives some 50+ years ago in München. My wife and I visited the city this past summer, having spent some 5 days there. It was my first time back since 2006. Of course, we visited Perlacher Forst, viewed Bldg. 335 (across the street from the movie theatre) where my family and I lived, checked-out the grounds of the former MAHS among other things.

The visit to Munich last summer was an eye-opener. In terms of how much the city has changed over the course of the past 15 years (not to mention, the past 50+ years). That being said, many of the sights-seen evoked a strong sense of "familiarity" and "connection". Often the so-called "little things". For example, the trademark MAHS paint-splattered elephant. Or our old "Boazn" (dive bar), The Elbo Room aka Mangfall Stüberl". Still recognizable although most thoroughly renovated. The old hospital which is now property of the German Federal Patent Office. 

For those endeavouring a visit to Munich, I can wholeheartedly recommend Hotel Kreisrezidenz am Moosfeld (near the Messegelände/former Flughafen Riem). Exceedingly impressive value for money

Some additional miscellaneous ramblings...

München, once reknown to be "Das größte Dorf Deutschlands" ("Germany's largest village") is now a distinctly multi-cultural metropolis. Those who are sentimentally inclined may be overwhelmed by a sense of melancholy, as what was once very characteristically "boarisch" now almost appears a bit...well...contrived. But a good amount of consolation can be found in the city's (still) magnificent historic architecture and the way it pastel shades of creme, yellow and okra interact with the late summer sun. Spectacular in it's own right. A daytrip to Andechs revealed much that was very familiar-as did a further daytrip to Bad Tölz (absolutely gorgeous Altstadt-and even prettier than I recalled from some 50 years ago). Despite the COVID distancing regulations, the Waldwirtschaft Grosshesslohe in Pullach remains the signature Munich beergarden that it's been for ages. The cost-of-living-as well as vacationing-is absolutely exorbitant. Munich remains a "young city" due to it's large university (and the LMU has grown in size considerably since our early 1970s MAHS days) and seemingly constant influx of young professionals from elsewhere in Germany...greater Europe...the Orient. Striking are also the legions of very visually attractive young people. And, oh yes...the old University Of Maryland building on the former McGraw Kaserne is not being torn down after all-but will be totally renovated and transformed into a dormatory facilities for Landespolizei trainees. 

Dear Jimmy:  I cannot actually remember you specifically but I graduated class of 1971 also.  Thank you very much for your detailed description of your recent visit to Munich and specifically Perlacher Forst and McGraw Kaserne.  I remember all the places as if it was yesterday and I loved your report and update on the elephant etc..  Sincerely Leslie Loomis (Hand)   

No sweat whatsoever, Leslie (regarding not recalling me...from over 50+ years ago !). I reckon that I could have been considered a "quite, reserved, somewhat of a "loner" kid" back then. Neither a "jock" nor a "nerd".

We are planning to attend the Vegas Reunion...always a special time with others no matter what year(s) everyone attended. Went to the Washington DC Reunion in fall, 2021 and had a great time. Hope that others from the '60's will be attending the October Reunion. Take care, All

The Nürnberger Bratwurstglöckl Am Dom (just off of the Frauenkirche) remains an authentic Bavarian eatery offering delicious "Schmanckerl" at not excessively exorbitant prices.

For those who may remember Vinzenzmurr, the reknown regional delicatessen chain: It remains a place to grab some quick "eat while you walk" fare (Leberkas-Semme and whatnot...) But I somehow recall it being a bit more...special some 50 years ago.

Kleiner Ochsenbrater at the Viktualienmarkt is a great place for a quick, warm Ochsensemme and a fresh Landshuter Brauerei beer (the non-alc beers are very tasty as well).

The Brauereigasthof Aying (in Aying just to the south of Munich) and its' adjacent Biergarten offer an absolutely excellent Böfflamott (Bavarian roast beef).

Thanks for the Munich Update! I was able to see some of that change. Definitely not my Mommy's Germany. Which in some ways is positive, however, I'm dated now too. Time keeps ticking...

I so enjoyed reading your observations about Munich - I visited about 4 years ago and was left with many of the same impressions.  I'm one of the ones who hadsome melancholy about things being so different but still found plenty to reconnect me to the my memories of how it used to be. ONe of the first things I did was go get a LeberKaes Semmel.   My year was 1971.  

Indeed, the pace of change can be overwhelming and, at times, perhaps a bit intimidating. But, as many a wise person has stated, "change is the only constant".

I certainly catch your drift, Lelon. With the "Big Seven Oh" rapidly approaching, cherishing "The NOW, the MOMENT" becomes all the more significant.

This is my first message to MAHS on this board. Just joined this site a bit ago but have so enjoyed seeing some familiar names and faces. I attended MAHS from 1969 to 1973.   Also attended 7th and 8th grade at the Jr. High there. We did not live on the base as my father worked for a broadcasting company which was not base related. 
I would love to know if anyone has had contact with any of my fellow graduates from the class of '73. 
My friends were Carol Kohn, Diane Moynihan, Gitta Holdjik, Donna Maixner, Toni Steuer.  We all did not live on base.

Nothing like a deadline for me to get on the stick and finally enter yet another unknown realm of technology... It has been fun reading postings from long ago friends.  Hello again Jimmy Fishel, I remember long, and I'm sure deep conversations as only high school seniors can have over a beer or two! Your Munich update brought up many smiles and fond memories.  Bronwyn , while not a Facebook enthusiast, I believe I saw a picture of you riding a palomino that could have been my Peaches twin on a trail where I would definitely go.  And Leslie Hand, I remember your inviting me to your house when I first arrived in Munich, making me feel very welcome!  Our class, and all the Munich Mustangs are the best!  It was so special seeing everyone at the reunion.  Many thanks to the organizers and all the participants who created such an incredibly positive energy, I'm still basking in it!  Regards to all and as we said in the 70's, Peace and Love,
