Susan Gaede Shipstead Passed Away July 3, 2022 Written by Maggie Shipstead, daughter of Susan and Pat Shipstead.
My mom, Susan, died suddenly early Sunday morning. She’d been in the hospital with complications of the chronic leukemia she’d lived with for 14 years, but she was doing well and her doctors were confident she would recover. Her blood, though, had almost no platelets, which made her vulnerable to a brain hemorrhage. It’s a small but meaningful comfort that she wasn’t in any pain and wouldn’t have known what was happening. We are bereft—we loved her so. She was the kindest, gentlest, most good-hearted person any of us could hope to meet, and she made our lives immeasurably better. She loved animals and children; she was a devoted friend and a committed educator (and PhD) who taught generations of elementary school teachers. She was never without a quilt project or needlework, and she left behind a trove of textiles that are as warm and beautiful as she was. I will miss her every day. 3/6/50–7/3/22

Ed Higgins III dies Ed Higgins died in NYC in December. He had become a well known artist in the Lower Manhattan art circles and with the Mail Art and Artists' Stamps World.
Ed Higgins III, a seminal Lower East Side artist known as a pillar of the Rivington School movement in the 1980s, and for his unique “mail art,” died earlier this month. He was 72.
Friends allegedly found Higgins in his Ludlow Street apartment last week after not hearing from him for several days. We’re told that cause of death was reportedly a heart attack.
Ed Higgins III lived in the same rent stabilized Ludlow Street tenement since 1976. Forty-five years after moving from Colorado to the Lower East Side as a recent graduate. You’ve probably seen him and his artwork around the neighborhood, but never thought twice about it. Namely, the “wingnut” icon of, you guessed it, a nut with wings. The most amazing school ever! So there I was, sitting in summer school because "the teachers really didn't know how to teach". Uhh... The next thing I know, I am getting called to see Mr. Schreiber.
"David, I just wanted to ask you if you would like to go to Sweden for the summer?"
"Wow..Sweden!! The capital city is Copenhagen", I said to myself. As you can tell, it's obvious why I was in summer school.
"Yes, Mr. Schreiber, that would be incredible." I returned to class, only to be summoned back to his office 10 minutes later. I immediately thought that they were going to tell me that the trip had been called off.
"Dave, the trip for the summer is off: they want you to stay for 15 months!"
I was floored. What would follow would set things in motion that would allow me to experience the most amazing 15 months of my life!
Thank you Vickie Martin for reaching out and encouraging me to share some of my experiences. Over the weeks ahead, I will share some of the things that I was able to experience. Things that ranged from going to West Berlin, visiting the Berlin wall, touring one of the concentration camps, visiting a library that had the largest collection of Rembrandts anywhere in the world, experiencing the first teacher strike in Sweden's history, breaking my wrist, having a former Olympic champion as my track coach, and soooooo much more!
Pioneer High was one of the greatest high schools in all of America, with the greatest classmates that a person could ever have asked for. So much happened in those turbulent 60's that would shape our city and our world. I was so blessed to have been a participant during those times.

Terry Cunningham Beem Teresa (Terry) Cunningham Beem
March 9, 1949 – March 23, 2020
We are very sad indeed to report that our dear friend and classmate Terry Cunningham succumbed to pancreatic cancer on March 23, 2020, in Evanston, Illinois. She is survived by her beloved sons, Nicholas Beem and Christopher Beem, and three adorable grandchildren, Jasper, Stella and Jack Beem.
After graduating AAHS in 1967, Terry matriculated at Wellesley College, where she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in three years’ time. She taught private school in Princeton before moving to Evanston, Illinois with her former husband, Marc Beem. Terry lived in Evanston until her death. (AAHS French students of Roger Swanson may remember that Evanston is the “land of milk and honey.”) She continued her education at Chicago’s prestigious Erickson Institute, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Child Development. Terry was an early childhood educator and consultant all of her professional life.
At AAHS, Terry distinguished herself as an excellent writer (she was the Co-Editor of Omega, the literary and arts magazine), a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist, and a civil rights activist, beginning with FAIR. Throughout her life, Terry was passionate about the Beatles, Motown, nature, children, choral music, yoga, and most of all, her loving and accomplished children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed reconnecting with AAHS classmates at our 50th reunion in 2017. Terry’s many devoted friends, colleagues and family members were inspired by the optimism, love, and enormous courage she demonstrated until the end of her life. We deeply mourn her loss.

Pandemic shelter-in-place It's a strange new world. We have been hunkered down in Orlando doing all the common sense measures that keep us healthy. Let me emphasize....common sense. Card games, board games, gardening (after all, it's Florida), and plenty of wine have made for a tolerable isolation. We are looking forward to easing of restrictions so we can enjoy our summer home on Lake Charlevoix. We count our blessings every day!!!
One of the most important things is: Thank God I really like the person I live with!!!!
Prayers are going out to those in trouble and wishing everybody good health.

How are you spending your time during the Pandemic? I wanted to check on all of you. It might be fun/interesting to see how everyone is spending your time while staying home. I have been tackling a giant project organizing boxes of old photos that never found their way into albums. It's fun to look back on those good memories. Also I've been making bread, sewing masks, and putzing around the house. Others might like to hear from you and would be interested on any clever or fun things to do.
I also want to thank all of the first responders who are putting their lives on the line each and every day. Not just the medical professionals but all of the support personel for doing their jobs. The truckers, grocery clerks, farmers, police, etc, etc. It takes a "village" to keep things going.
I hope you are doing well during these terrible times. Remember, we are all in this together. Stay safe and well!

Update on Kent Kittel Kent has done such a great job over the years keeping us updated on our classmates and I thought it was time someone returned the favor for Kent! I am posting this on Kent's behalf and with his permission.

In March he started on kidney dialysis, in July he had his other leg amputated and last month he had to have a finger amputated due to a complication from this dialysis fistula. He has the most positive attitude, remains optimistic and has proven he is very resilient! He would love to hear from anyone who might have time to visit, email, send a card or call. He has been at the Regency Bluffs Rehabilittion Facility in Ann Arbor since March. He is unable to text on his phone, but can answer emails on his Ipad. Casual Get Together We had a good time at Revel and Roll Sunday evening! 22 Classmates attended with various partners and guests. We met in the Coaches Room, a private meeting room off the bar, thanks to Bob and Susie Ufer. Hope we can do it again next year for our 70th birthday year (Jacquie Baird suggested that). I would be happy to organize it, more in advance this time, so more classmates can plan to attend. What time of year is best? I was thinking about Pioneer High’s Homecoming weekend, and attending the football game and festivities, what do you think? I’d appreciate your input if you have a preference. History of Ann Arbor Schools
Thanks to Jacquie Baird for the following link on the Tappan website and thought it would be nice to link it to the AAHS website so we don't lose it. We think you'll find it interesting and will enjoy the historical value of it. It's a very lengthy article so make yourself comfortable.

Sue Hackbarth Sartori was a great one We chatted at the reunion, she still had her humor and "out of the box" thinking which I always liked. She never let on about the challenge she was facing, brave soul. She was the only one who could run ahead of me, those long legs kicking up dust as she crossed the finish line. We always need someone to push us to be better. Best wishes to her huge family, I know she will be looking down on all those she loves. Susan Finnegan Fefferman

Sue (Hackbarth) Rickard-Sartori Rickard-Sartori, Jennifer "Sue" 12/28/1948 - 9/25/2017 Jennifer "Sue" Rickard-Sartori, aged 68, died peacefully on September 25, 2017 at home in Grass Lake, MI, after a courageous battle with cancer. Sue was born December 28, 1948, in Ann Arbor, MI, the daughter of Oscar and Edanna Hackbarth. Sue graduated from Ann Arbor High School, recently attending her 50 year reunion. She loved attending these reunions and the annual townie party and staying in touch with her high school friends. Being such a social person, she easily adapted to life as a hair dresser, and loved all of her clients. Her clients were like family. She also loved animals, wildlife and the outdoors, and was known for rescuing hurt or abandoned animals, including raccoons. With horses and chickens and a dog named Hula at home, plus tons of wildlife surrounding her, there wasn't any place she would rather be! Sue had two loves of her life. Her first husband, Mickey, was her high school sweetheart and introduced her to Harley Davidson's and they would often travel together across the country on the motorcycle. When he passed in 1990, she learned to ride the Harley herself and went on many more adventures and trips. She shared the motorcycle passion with her second husband, John Sartori, as well as their love of horses. They loved spending time together at their home in Grass Lake, and watching the kids and grandkids play. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jim Hackbarth and husband, Mickey Rickard. Sue is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Pam Rickard (Carl), and Sarah (Chadd) Hogle; step-daughters, Melissa (Tom) McPherson and Angela (Mike) Kreuger; God-daughter, Sheri (Fred) Burke; grandkids, Mike, Vince, Taylor, Kiera, Mickey, Bella, Jake, Libby and Johnny; her siblings, Carolyn (Dave) DeBorde, Sandy (David) VandenBosch, Jerri Cole (Todd) and Steve (Lori) Hackbarth; numerous nieces and nephews as well as her extended hair family (including her clients and many co-workers over the years). Sue donated her body to Wayne State University, and a memorial service will be held at Sue and John's home in Grass Lake this Saturday, September 30th at 2pm. Please bring a chair and dish to pass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in Sue's name to the Huron Valley Humane Society or Arbor Hospice. Arrangement's entrusted to Sherwood Funeral Home, Grass Lake.

Irma in South Carolina Thank you once again for your concern and wishes. We got lucky with Irma unlike Matthew last October that did some damage to our property and all of the Lowcountry. We ended up with 9" of rain over about a 8 hour period of time and had constant 40 mph winds with gusts hitting 67 mph which was pretty scary when you have several 80' and 90' tall pine trees around your home. We could actually see the trees swaying as much as 20' in each direction and banging together which brought down several limbs but the trees stayed standing. So bottom line is no damage this time around but there was some flooding from the rain and storm surge in the area. My brother questioned us as if we made the right move down here seeing we have had two hurricanes in the past 11 months but when there are no storms it is absolutely beautiful down here.
All the best to the both of you and enjoy this last week of summer.

Hurricane Irma Our winter home of Venture Out on Cudjoe Key was hit pretty hard by Irma. Fortunately for us, we rent an RV lot and live in our motor home. The lot looks good! But many people either suffered significant damage to their homes or lost them entirely. Still, as we are able to view the photos and videos that trickle in, it could have been much worse. No one who didn't stay is allowed back in yet. They are waiting for road clearance, water, power, etc. it wil be an interesting winter!
Rebecca (Becky) Davis
Irma It was late when Irma decided to take a golf slice to the east and put Orlando in her crosshairs. We are safe in our Charlevoix home but the damage from fallen trees to our home in Florida is going to hurt. Although we stressed out, we were glad to be up in Michigan watching instead of hunkering down in a bathtub in Florida waiting for a tree to crash onto us.
Hope everyone affected by Irma and Harvey are ok. Prayers go out to everyone.

Hey Vickie,
We just finished putting up all of the covering over our windows here in the Hilton Head area of South Carolina but the NOAA website as of 11:00 a.m. in now suggesting the Hurricane Irma is heading further west and that we might not get hit too hard so instead of leaving today for higher ground we are going to wait and see where this hurricane goes.
Thanks for staying in touch.

Vicke,
My Florida wind-turbine automation project is totally on hold. Water, water, everywhere but none to drink. Luckily I live in Ann Arbor.
Cheers,

No weather problems in Virginia Since Virginia is the northernmost southern state and Richmond is about 100 miles from the coast it looks like we will not be bothered by the hurricane. We were planning to host my stepson's family from Lakewood Ranch Fl. but they waited too long and weren't able to get out on the interstate which is now more of a parking lot. Richmond has been more involved in the recent ruckus about removing Confederate statues. Since this was the Capital of the Confederacy the statues are pretty much everywhere.

News from Texas Hurricanes... Palacios, Texas was blessed. Destruction all around us, but we only had a few tree limbs down. Because we were not harmed, we have been able to give aid to other communities. Thank you, for thoughts and prayers. May God Bless,
