Stephan Nelson
STEVE NELSON KILLED IN ACTION IN VIETNAM
" I deeply regret to confirm the death of your son . . ." Those were the first words of a Marine Corps message delivered to George Nelson and his family, 107 N. 12th Ave., Princeton on a September Sunday morning. Lance Corporal Stephan J. Nelson, 18, was killed in action in Vietnam. The message was signed by the Commanding General of the Marine Corps.

Nelson was killed in action in the vicinity of Quang Tri in the Republic of Vietnam on Thursday, Sept. 7, 1967. His death was caused when a enemy shell exploded near him and shrapnel fragments struck him in the head. Stephan Nelson thus became Princeton's first victim of the Vietnam conflict. He was born October 10, 1948 and was a 1966 graduate of Princeton High School.

"News About Servicemen" files of the Union reveal Nelson completed four weeks of individual combat training in November 1966, and in February completed a 15-day refresher training and processing cycle with the staging battalion at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was sent to Vietnam in the spring of 1967.

Funeral arrangements were by Kaun Funeral Home. Burial services were conducted at the Glendorado Lutheran Church with Rev. John W. Eyer officiating. Interment was at the Glendorado Luthern Cemetery.

Stephan received full Military Honors: The USMC Marine Air Reserve Attachment provided pallbearers, firing squad, bugler and color guard for the services. Honorary pallbearers were: Kenneth Anderson, Peter Jacobs, Leland Peterson, Donald Cook, Roger Nelson and Robert Wolf.

Stephan Nelson was born October 10, 1948, to George and Lorraine Nelson (nee Madsen) in Princeton. He attended the first six school grades at School No. 33 South Benton County. He graduated from Princeton High School in May, 1966. He is survived by his father and stepmother, 2 brothers; John W. and Gerald A.: and three sisters: Mrs. Patrick (Donna) Morrison, Minneapolis: Beverly, Minneapolis and Nancy, Princeton. Other survivors include: two grandmothers, Mrs. John A. Madsen and Mrs. Antone Nelson, both of Princeton. His mother passed away in May 1965.

He was a member of the Glendorado Lutheran Church where he was confirmed on Oct. 26, 1963. He moved to Princeton in Oct. 1964. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in July, 1966 and had been stationed in Vietnam since Jan. 1967.

H. R. Findell 12th grade advance bookkeeping teacher - "Steve had a real nice personality and smiled a lot. For three years he was pretty active in intramural basketball. He got along well with the kids and seemed to be very clean cut. Everyone speaks well of him."

STEPHAN JOSEPH NELSON
Marine Corps Lance Corporal

Born: October 10, 1948
Died: September 7, 1967

Stephan Joseph Nelson, enlisted in Minneapolis, Minnesota in June, 1966. He trained at Camp Pendleton and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, I Company, 2nd Platoon. As Donna Parish, Stephan's oldest sister says, "Stephan was an all-around kid. He was very likable, always had a smile on his face, and was a loving and caring person. He was the youngest of my three brothers. Because our mother had suffered from cancer for many years and had passed away two years before Stephan, he was more like a son to me." As a young kid, he mowed lawns for neighbors in the summer and later worked as a farm hand during high school for a good friend and neighbor. Stephan graduated from Princeton High School in 1966.

It was Stephan's life-long dream to fulfill his duty as an American by serving in the military. He was the only Marine in the entire family. His two older brothers were in the Army, one of whom was in Vietnam two years before Stephan. Stephan completed four weeks of individual combat training in November of 1966 and took a refresher training and processing cycle later. Stephan was sent to Vietnam in January of 1967. He served as a point man on many missions in Vietnam. In one letter, he joked about digging a foxhole for his young nephews in his brother's front lawn when he returned home. Stephan had talked about getting a new car as soon as he finished his tour of duty and then possibly going to college.

Stephan wrote letters as often as he could, the last of which his sister Donna received after being notified of his death. In that letter he wrote about being "so tired" and wet. In letters to his sister, Nancy, he always asked for any food she could send such as lemon drops, cookies, and Kool-Aid. He said that all of the guys shared the food they received from home with everyone. Stephan wrote about the terrible conditions they lived with, such as going without rations for two days at a time when their supply routes were cut off and carrying packs weighing as much as 100 pounds for several miles. He also talked about how the Viet Cong would booby trap the hills after they left. Stephan believed he was in Vietnam to protect Americans from Communism and the living conditions caused by it.

Stephan was killed in Quang Tri in the Republic of Vietnam on Thursday, September 7, 1967, when shrapnel fragments from an enemy shell struck him in the head. Stephan was the first Vietnam war casualty in the Princeton area. His death was very devastating for everyone. He is buried in Glendorado, Minnesota. Stephan is survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Several family members have visited the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial and all attended the dedication of the Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Semper Fidelis, Marine!

A Grand Mesa resident was killed at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday when he was thrown from and crushed by his rolling van on Hwy. 65, three miles north of Cedaredge. The victim, Dennis Joseph Rau, age 24, incurred a massive head injury.
Reportedly returning home after attending a Club 20 meeting, Rau had stopped briefly in Cedaredge to call his wife before continuing to Spruce Lodge on Grand Mesa, where he assisted his parents-in-law with its operation.

According to State Patrolman Kenneth Lederhos, the north-bound vehicle veered off the right side of the highway for 225 feet before bouncing against two highway delineator posts. The vehicle then traveled 324 feet across the road to the right and plunged over a steep embankment, rolling over several times during the 175-foot downward journey. The vehicle, after spilling Rau, rolled over him, Lederhos said. His 1971 van truck was considered a total loss.
