Delighted we are having another 1959 class reunion. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again.
After Buchtel, I continued my education at Ohio State, majoring in history and receiving three degrees in five years. I then taught in a high school in Indianapolis before leaving for Europe with my husband, Ron DeVore, on our First Wedding Anniversary. On this 18-month trip, while Ron pursued research in private and public archives in several countries, I took every opportunity to learn about the people, history and cultures we encountered. With our blue 1966 VW, we explored 12 countries, including Iron Curtain countries. In Istanbul I learned enough Turkish to read the newspaper and carry on basic conversations. In London I joined an archaeological team that was excavating the Newgate Prison. We did this again a few years later when I was completing the PhD in history from the University of Southern California, with a specialty in 17th-century France. Along the way, I taught deaf and hard of hearing students at Gallaudet College, in Washington, DC and then at a new high school in Downey California. When our son Marc was four, I began my work at the University of California, Irvine, where I developed the Campuswide Honors and the Scholarship Opportunities Programs. My 11 years since retiring have been filled with travel, reading, learning languages, and pursuing interests that had been put on hold. There's still so much more to do!! I have one child, Marc, who is teaching International Relations at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. So, Ron and I fly to Scotland often. Our granddaughter, Aliénor, speaks English with a French-Scottish accent.
