I was in broadcast news for more than 30 years, split more or less equally between the Voice of America and National Public Radio, both in Washington, DC. At NPR, I was the editor and later Executive Producer of All Things Considered, the network's evening news magazine. (My first day as E.P. was 9/11/2001!) I then created a journalism training unit for people at NPR and at public stations around the country. As part of that job, I wrote a book, "Sound Reporting," which is still used occasionally as a textbook in journalism classes.
