Teacher
Mrs Sillerud and Mr. Shay,I liked most of my teachers, but some stood out as 'mean as sin' - started off 1st grade with 'Miss Clark' - didn't take long to find out why she was a 'Miss', not a 'Mrs'; then 2nd grade, I had Mrs Southard - she was evil - I was traumatized, so forgot who I had in 3rd grade; then 4th grade, I had Mrs Sandin - another mean one - both Southard and Sandin slapped me around for drawing pictures - I would have quit school in 4th grade, if I could have - I was never a trouble-maker in school, but the sure had it in for me - 5th & 6th grade, I must have blocked out, but I vaguely remember a 'Miss Wagner' - in a pleasant way - I hated grade school.
Playground Memory
I have few if any memories of the playground stuff - probably blocked that out, too.
Milk Break
Vaguely remember that.
Lunch
In high school when we could leave the school, I always walked down to the Kapsner Drug store, and spent my lunch money on Hit Parade Magazines, or any kind that caught my attention - by then, everyone had their little cliques and you don't cross their lines.
Mel Shay Storytime
I'm not sure if it was our Junior or Senior year, had him 2 years in a row - I remember him throwing it hard, when Terry Daniels put dead minnows in a little 'baggie', in his file cabinet - he was MAD! - but kept his composure, and said "whoever put these in here, remove them 'Now'"....then he walked back to his desk, and stood there 'waiting' - the silence was deafening. But it was Mr. Barg who I saw throw the eraser more times than I can count.
In Trouble
I even hate thinking about this, but here goes....I recall in bookkeeping class, (forgot the teachers' name) seems it was after lunch, everybody was wild - I don't recall 'why', but a couple of the boys were picking on me, (I won't name them here) and I was very, upset - at one point, I was approached from just to my left side, I jabbed my elbow backward, right into the stomach of one of them - it was a 'hollow victory' for me, it didn't feel good at all, to hit him like that..I felt awful about it, and still do....so if he is reading this, I want to apologize to him for doing that - I came close to saying that at the 45th, but I chickened out. Seeing him at that reunion, he was being so nice - if I could go back and change it, I would. I did end up in the office, but voluntarily - I was going to quit school...I didn't, there was nowhere to go...That incident has been nagging me all these years...I regret it.

Well, electronically, that would be me - I am 'challenged' in that area, to put it mildly - I won't own a cell phone one in the house rings enough - but I don't want the 'Dunce' award for that.

Our bus ride was long, we lived 12 miles out from Princeton, by the time we got off the bus, the only ones left on there were Richard Anderson, Vernon Kucera and Sharon Wicktor - Sharon and I became good friends on those rides during the year before she graduated in '64 - we are still in touch at Christmas, saw her a few times in Princeton...to and from school were the only times I rode the bus...but those one-to-one talks with Sharon were nice.

Just for a brief time in 1956, when my dad was in a car wreck, 31 broken bones and all his teeth knocked out - we stayed with relatives, the Andersons, and went to the Glendorado school with their kids....it was a bad time for us, being little kids, not knowing if ewe had a Dad or not - there was a fatality in the other car, too, a PHS student in her Senior year. All the roads were gravel, it was a hot and dusty ride - they never saw each other coming, the other car tried to pass the gas truck, it was a head-on collision....no one's fault. I don't remember what grade, maybe 3rd...

After basketball practice, Dave Duncan and I would "borrow" some chocolate milk from the refrigerator in the old gym, (a goodly amount). We walked the alley to my house and I would give Dave a ride home. My mom could never understand why I wasn't hungry that night. Guilt played a part one day and we left 10 cents. Cleared our minds. Statute of limitations allowed me to tell this story.
Lunch
The only time I ate hot lunch (I used to run home for soup) was when they served sloppy joes, and you could get an extra one for 5 cents.
Mel Shay Storytime
I was in the back row of his class, the window open, so I took a "bit" of snow off the sill and threw it at Joanne. Mel asked me if I did that, I say yes - he then said don't do it again, where I replied "I will never do it again." Dave and I also kept track of his "blackouts". All in all I thought he was a good teacher with a sense of humor.
In Trouble
Dave Duncan and I were by the old high school, outside the doors to the gym on the 4th avenue side. We were too lazy to walk around so we used popsicle sticks to work the lock and open the door. We succeeded! BUT, behind the door was my dad - not good. Dave had to leave and I was told in no uncertain terms to never do that again. Not a pleasant night at our house.

In Trouble
I spent some time in the principal's office. One time I put Sue Fett on top of the lockers and Mrs. Oliver caught me and sent me to the man. I accidentally dumped a whole can of varnish on Elton Stanchfield. That did it. Mr. Cary sent me to the office with Elton but when he explained he tripped and fell into me, I was off the hook.
